Well, just needed to make a comment on this because I happened to read a few blogs recently talking about this. I think it all started with Dane Carlson’s blog where he created a nifty little tool to quickly get a “value” of your blog. You should try it!
Now, I say, its really nice and fun. Gives you the giggles to see the value of your blog. But before you plan that holiday to the Bahamas and try to sell off your blog, just a simple reality check. A value based on empirical measurement, by no means convey an accurate real world value. Before anyone calls me a sour grape, let’s take a look at my blog’s “value”. Quite cool, at $52K, I think i can bring a few of you with me to the Bahamas. I like!
This is based purely on your Technorati rankings, and using the dollar value data from the AOL-Weblogs Inc deal to extrapolate. Its a really cool concept.
This started me on a quick search for something a little more concrete in terms of really evaluating the worth of my humble little blog, and I found this: Website Grader. Now this is a much more comprehensive look at your site in terms of your Google Page Rank, Technorati, Alexa and so on. But most importantly, I found the data presented was actually useful in pointing me towards where I could improve my standings. Part of the fun of online marketing is the constant tweaking and improvements that we can make to our sites/blogs. Information is important for us. And this site delivers.
There are lots of other sites, including sites like PRchecker.info that you can see on my links in the sidebar to your left; that provides other cool stats. There are others that give you a Page Rank reading by server, I think they poll individual data centers or something. But anyway, the upshot of the matter is this – have fun with the stats, but don’t get too carried away. The information can help us make our sites better, technically, but in the end; it is the quality of your content (and how sexy you are) that keeps people coming back for more!
